Found a patch of Old Growth I never knew about but had passed by many times. Being among these giants you can feel something special. Hope they stay protected.

A tall Old Growth tree is viewed from the ground up, surrounded by other trees and greenery, with a clear sky visible above. The tree's textured bark and moss detail are prominent.

Passed this today, on another lovely long walk..

An old oak that has set up home in an older lime kiln, built into the slope of Cregiau Eglwyseg to produce material for local agricultural needs, out of the lime from the local quarries. In the front there is an arched stoke hole for the furnace

in front of a waterfall, a moss-covered tree root hovers about six inches over a flowing creek - likely the creek eroded the dirt beneath the roots, and the upper branches of neighboring trees kept the thing suspended in place

the inside bit of some peeled tree bark with two horizontal holes in the center, from which radiate many lines of termite eating through the bark in an almost calligraphic style

$a fractured end of a log that appears to have been cut more with an axe than a chainsaw, with a dappled black and brown pattern over its surface, and moss on the far bark$

dieser baum heut sah aus, als sei ihm die rinde wie ein lockerer strumpf heruntergerutscht

unteres ende eines baumstamms mit braungrauer rinde. oben ist die rinde rechteck-schuppig, unten, an der stelle wo sich der stamm zum fuß hin verbreitert, wirft die rinde rundum wulstige wellen, die nach unten hin immer enger werden, kurzwelliger wenn man so will. das sieht aus als sei eine dünne haut des stammes etwas abgerutscht und staue sich unten.

A photo from a winter many years ago of a young boy standing next to what, above eye level, looks like an ordinary tree. Below that is the snarl of roots the tree has developed over the years in order to live on top of the granite slab its little seed once fell upon and sprouted. Roots, large and small, head off in all directions in search of nutrients and something to hold onto. There’s a light cover of snow on the forest floor and some of the roots.

Rather a sad picture for #ThickTrunkTuesday but just shows the strength of the winter storms. On my walk last Friday I saw many fallen trees in the upland valleys - it looked like the winds had been funnelled. Most lifted at the roots but this one (oak?) was shattered. Maybe it already had a weakness, I don’t know.
