Trivial Einstein<p><a href="https://beige.party/tags/TIL" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TIL</span></a> that aspirin and heroin, both German inventions, have stupid medicinal names just like Wellbutrin and Ozempic. I mean, I knew that Bayer invented heroin, and I knew that someone had invented aspirin, but I had just never made the connection to their names because they're in such common parlance that one doesn't usually think hard about them. But both are "[SOME ROOT WORD] + in" aren't they.</p><p>In the case of "aspirin," you shouldn't believe everything you read. It likely comes from the plant from which salicylic acid is derived (though willow bark is the original derivation) in Germany, the meadowsweet, which used to be classified as Spiraea ulmaria, hence "spir," and "a" for "acetylated," plus "in" for "thing we add to the end of the names of drugs to make them sound official." Except not everyone agrees with that, even though I'm pretty sure that's the actual etymology. There's a pretty fanciful theory that it comes from the poison of the asp, for instance.</p><p>I had wondered whether it was named "aspire-in" but the Germans don't say "aspire," or anything similar unless they're talking about "aspirate." In German, it would be "strebenin" if they had wanted to name it aspirationally. Still, it's a hopeful sounding drug name in English.</p><p>"Heroin," on the other hand, is for exactly the reasons I should have expected. "Hero" plus "in." Oy. It was staring me right in the face the whole time.</p>

Natürlich achte ich dabei besonders auf den Stromverbrauch. Nach guten Erfahrungen mit der <a href="https://fedifreu.de/tags/ARM64" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ARM64</span></a>-Architektur selbst bei leistungshungrigen Anwendungen wie <a href="https://fedifreu.de/about" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mastodon</a> setze ich jetzt auch zuhause auf auf die aus Smartphones bekannte Technologie.</p><p>Es gibt zwar <a href="https://fedifreu.de/tags/SBCs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SBCs</span></a> mit offenerer Hardware, aber der <a href="https://fedifreu.de/tags/RaspberryPi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RaspberryPi</span></a> ist überall erhältlich, gut dokumentiert, leistungsfähig und preiswert. Und es gibt ihn mit bis zu 16 GB RAM.</p><p>Wer einen Server am Internet betreibt, muss zügig <a href="https://fedifreu.de/tags/Sicherheitsupdates" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Sicherheitsupdates</span></a> einspielen. Viele vergessen aber, laufende Software neuzustarten, damit die neue Version läuft statt der alten. Dabei hilft auf debianbasierten Linux-Systemen das Tool <a href="https://fedifreu.de/tags/needrestart" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>needrestart</span></a>, das leider meist nicht vorinstalliert ist.</p><p>Auf meinem Raspberry Pi 4 läuft <code>needrestart</code> schon immer korrekt (automatisch nach <code>apt upgrade</code>).
